Artist’s Statement
Each of the three paintings in this exhibit show three different approaches to drawing with paint.
How it Was was done in my office building studio on West 29th Street, one of the last paintings in oil I did during that period.
Soon after and dissatisfied with the heaviness that was overwhelming my oil paintings, I started cutting out wooden cars and trucks and painting on them with acrylic paint and pencil. So it was working on these wooden taxis with no figure ground issues to struggle with. My drawing and an electric sander as an eraser, my drawing became as liberated as it had been earlier in my dance drawings. I used brushes and very diluted oil paint so that much of the drawing was done by the dripping of the paint.
In My Town, I used straight edges and a ruler, pencil and watercolor pencils for much of the drawing so that it became a much more geometic, straight edged construction. The construction of that image grew directly out of the work I was doing with the wooden taxis and trucks.
Lastly, in Fast Painting I used large house paint brushes and rollers to make the marks, the drawing here, growing directly out of the drawing on the painted wooden trucks. Each one of those paintings was done in a different studio- 29th Street, Keep Street in Williamsburg, and at the Sharpe Foundation on Jay Street.
